What happened at the cross?

When Jesus went to the cross and suffered a broken body and was wounded by many stripes, it was so that this redemptive work may be available throughout eternity in his name.

Peter declared

who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness — by whose stripes you were healed

1 Peter 2:24

Jesus died to make salvation from sin and sickness available to all; he paid the price for our redemption from the power of sin and sickness.

God calls us to glorify him in our bodies as we do in our spirits, to accept sickness or to tolerate it is to dishonor God in our bodies.

‘Christians must have as much hatred for sickness or anything that dishonors God in their bodies as they should for anything that contaminates the spirit.’

If we accept that sin is unholy then we must also accept that sickness is unholy too, for both come from the same source.

Delivered at the cross

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.

Gal 3:13

When Jesus went to the cross, he delivered us from the curse of the law. What is the curse of the law?

God gave Moses a break down of the blessings that would come upon the people when they walked in the covenant of God and also the curses that would overtake them when they broke God’s covenant.

If you think about it carefully, you will see that everything that is covered under the curse of the law is actually the same things that are so rampant in our world today.

In other words the curse of the broken law is to come under the power of death from which we are delivered by the Lord Jesus Christ.

The curse of the law includes sickness, diseases and every known death dealing condition

However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess….. The Lord will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish

Deut. 28:21-22, Deut. 28:4

Jesus became a curse for us!

If he did that, then you need not come under that curse anymore.

In his earthly ministry the Lord Jesus waged an unrelenting war against sin and sickness

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Matt 9:35

For a long time the devil has succeeded in deceiving us to take a lesser view of what Jesus did to redeem us from sickness, it is time to glorify God and stand strong against sin and sickness.

This is another reason why believers should be careful about their personal health and not abuse their bodies.

I remember the words of Andrew Murray who lay dying at the age of 39 years, he lamented ‘God gave me a message and a donkey (his body) to deliver the message, I have killed the donkey and I cannot deliver the message’.

This will not be our experience or lamentation.
