GET RID OF UNBELIEF

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,

Heb 3:12-15 NKJV

So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God. 13 For as long as it’s still God’s Today, keep each other on your toes so sin doesn’t slow down your reflexes. 14 If we can only keep our grip on the sure thing we started out with, we’re in this with Christ for the long haul.

Heb 3:12-14 (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

[Therefore beware] brethren, take care, lest there be in any one of you a wicked, unbelieving heart [which refuses to cleave to, trust in, and rely on Him], leading you to turn away and desert or stand aloof from the living God.

But instead warn (admonish, urge, and encourage) one another every day, as long as it is called Today, that none of you may be hardened [into settled rebellion] by the deceitfulness of sin [by the fraudulence, the stratagem, the trickery which the delusive glamor of his sin may play on him].

For we have become fellows with Christ (the Messiah) and share in all He has for us, if only we hold our first newborn confidence and original assured expectation [in virtue of which we are believers] firm and unshaken to the end.

Heb 3:12-14 AMP

If there is a warning to take very seriously, it is this, Get rid of unbelief in your life. Unbelief is the root of all sin; it is the channel through which the insidious grip of death is established in the life of the believer in Christ Jesus.

Paul was speaking these words to believers, that is people who have put their faith in Jesus and he was tying their experience in unbelief to the experiences of the children of Israel who failed to enter the land flowing with milk and honey because of their collective unbelief.

God is spirit, he communicates his will and heart towards us in words or promises and He requires that His people believe his words to experience the reality of his promises.

Concerning the children of Israel God had this to say

The people refused to enter the pleasant land, for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.

Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.

Therefore, he solemnly swore that he would kill them in the wilderness,

Unbelief shut first-generation Israel out of the Promised Land, unbelief led to the fall of the first man, and unbelief caused the people in Jesus’s hometown to fail to experience the healing presence of God through Jesus, if unbelief had such disastrous consequences then, it still has the same today.

This unbelief was not the result of something the people had no control over but a result of decisions they took or did not take.

Unbelief manifests and dresses in different clothing but it is unbelief nonetheless, grumbling, complaining and scoffing are all manifestations of unbelief.

There is a place of rest in Jesus Christ for all who believe and that place can only be accessed by faith, and absolute confidence in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and our God.

The one challenge you must overcome in your life is the challenge of unbelief, God hates unbelief, it is a slight on his character and integrity. If you must overcome unbelief, here are a couple of things you should note.

  • Ask God for a revelation of Jesus, He is the living example of the power and integrity of the word of God, immerse yourself in his words and the words of God, remember Jesus said anyone who hears, believes in, and obeys his words will be immoveable no matter what comes against him/her (Matt.7:24-28).
  • Determine or make up your mind that no matter what you will choose the words of God over any other.
  • Learn to say what you believe based on God’s word and not what you feel or see.
  • Thank God for his word continually, an attitude of thanksgiving and praises is fuel for faith.
  • Always remember that to believe or not to believe is a decision you take.

Beloved, make it a life duty to get rid of every trace of unbelief in you so that you can experience God’s fullest blessings and power.
